Book seven of the Ciaphas Cain series

Legendary Commissar Ciaphas Cain joins a group of Reclamators Space Marines aboard a space hulk but soon finds himself alone and faced with both tyranids and orks....

Listen to it because: it's a typically sideways look at the mighty Adeptus Astartes (albeit a pretty unusual chapter), viewing them through the eyes of the wry and dry Commissar Cain.

The story: Commissar Cain is called to duty once more, saving a governor's daughter from a planet overrun by rebels. The uprising hides something far more sinister however - genestealer hybrids! The search for the source of the alien threat leads Cain to a drifting space hulk - a far safer place than beside the obsessed governor's daughter. But when the Reclamator Space Marines suffer devastating losses at the hands of the Great Devourer, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone. With the tyranids waking and a group of stow away orks on the loose, there are no safe places to run or hide, and Cain must use all his ingenuity and cunning to escape the space hulk alive.

Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Helen McAlpine, Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins and Andrew James Spooner.

I loved how at the end Myra asked Cain to leave before her wedding with the young governor of Serendipita (prime). But I feel like she should've done that differently.

If her father was far from likely to show up for the wedding so he could be usurped on Veridia just to give her away at the altar. Myra could do worse than have herself given away by the Legendary Ciaphus Cain at the altar with a kiss on her hand, a firm handshake to the groom, and a genuinely fond farewell between them.

Y'know when he slips out the back door before the rings hit fingers and the cake was cut. Or however the ultra rich of the planetary government nobility does it. Since by the time Cain would've likely hopped in a Salamander or something with Jurgen driving his usual crazy way to the nearest military transport going Anywhere Lol.

If that actually did happen I could imagine them freaking out just by seeing Jurgen at the door. Before Cain hits the isle with Myra on his arm. Jurgen could be standing with a few Guard officers dressed in banquet and diplomatic type uniforms with Laz-guns ready. And after giving that kiss on the hand to the bride, he snaps her a Fine and Crisp “parade ground” salute mirrored by the Guardsman, and whatever Jurgen does.

Cain's Growth and being necessarily surprised by someone he feels superior to as a Soldier making it all a valued experience
