A missionary in nineteenth-century Africa suffers a chilling crisis of faith in a short story about deliverance, friendship, and metamorphosis by the award-winning author of Riot Baby.

Nathaniel is a well-intentioned, if naive, British cleric feeling blessed to educate a West African village about the benevolent power of God. But as slavers encroach, Nathaniel’s endeavor is daunted by the realities unfolding on the beautiful homeland of his congregation. It seems the Devil has power too. What follows for Nathaniel is a profound spiritual upheaval as he questions his purpose and even his humanity.

Short story from the Amazon Originals series “Tresspass,” about a missionary who is challenged by how different the culture he visits is, and who talks about meeting “Hyena-Men.”

This was just okay for me. I listened to the audio narration which was performed well, it just didn’t wow me. Audible version was a free addition when I downloaded on kindle unlimited.

Just Okay, Audio Performance Was Great

I've never understood the conviction of the missionary. I find that their righteous point of view is rather narrow-minded. In this story, the hero's journey is epistolary and rather ironic. Free with Prime Reading.

My only complaint about this book is that it was too short. Well written and had me engaged from the start
