    This is the 34th episode of David Roberts´ CALM leadership series. For this one, he continues to look at how leaders can build strong, long-lasting relationships that provide benefits for both parties.

    To do this he builds on the 4-step process he shared in his previous CALM episode. Using the example of a coaching relationship he provides practical advice any leader can use to build strong connections with others. Relationships that have context, are mutually beneficial, lead to action and good outcomes.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Building rapport takes time.
    • Build on that rapport by using good body language.
    • The connection part of the conversation should not take more than 20% of the time you spend with someone. If it is taking longer, you need to tweak your approach.
    • For your relationship to have context you need to ask open questions that enable you to learn more about the other person and demonstrate to them that you are genuinely interested in them.
    • Leave sufficient time at the end of your coaching session or conversation to share the very specific calls to action.
