Im Porzellanstaat ist das Kinderkriegen strengstens untersagt, schließlich handelt es sich um eine viel zu fragile Welt für Kinder. Ein Töpferehepaar versteckt seine Tochter Heidel Beere darum kurzerhand in einem Blumentopf, der schließlich auch die Aufmerksamkeit des Prinzen erlangt. Neun Fräulein, allesamt auf eine Ehe mit dem Prinzen aus, haben es auf die so zerbrechliche Heidel Beere abgesehen. Das Stück ist ein Paradebeispiel für das Kunstmärchen. Was zunächst kindlich-naiv anmutet, zeigt zahlreiche Spuren romantischer Ironie und dramatischer Überspitzung.
