Two kingdoms, ancient enemies, must stand alone against an implacable invader in the masterful conclusion of the Great God’s War epic from the New York Times bestselling author of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

They are coming.

The kingdoms of Belleger and Amika had been fighting for generations. But then they learned of a terrible threat moving through them to destroy the Last Repository, an immense hidden library. To face this greater enemy, King Bifalt of Belleger and Queen Estie of Amika allied their lands and prepared for war.

They are at the door.

Now the time of preparation is over. Black ships and sorcery test the cannon that defend the Bay of Lights. Treachery and betrayal threaten the kingdoms. The priests of the Great God Rile sow dissent. And Estie rides for the Last Repository, desperate to enlist the help of their Magisters—and to understand the nature of her own magical gift.

They are here.

Bifalt hates sorcery as much as he loves Estie, and the discovery that she could become a Magister shatters him. But he must rally and fight. Belleger and Amika are all that stand between the Great God’s forces and his ultimate goal: the destruction of the Last Repository and its treasure of knowledge.

Critic reviews

Praise for Seventh Decimate, Book One of the Great God’s War

“It promises to be as rich in detail as its predecessors—and, Mr. Donaldson’s trademark, as emotionally deep and as psychologically unpredictable.”—The Wall Street Journal

“A new Stephen Donaldson book is always a cause for celebration. Seventh Decimate will whet your appetite for a sequel.”—New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks

“Fantastic.”—Booklist

“Donaldson delivers a surprising start to what promises to be a very unconventional fantasy series…And thus is another fantasy classic forged. Recommended.”—SF Revu

“[Donaldson] is a writer who has explored the themes of grimdark before grimdark existed, and well knows how to deliver epic qualities in his fantasy prose...Seventh Decimate is a strong novel and promises much for what is to come in Donaldson’s new series, The Great God’s War.”—SF Book

Another compelling story from Stephen R Donaldson. Wonderful characters embedded in a grand struggle for survival of people and land. Sad to hear it end.

Loved it.

I"be been a big fan of Stephen for many years, if you haven't read Lord Fouls Bane and the consequent series, you should. He is also brilliant at sci-fi, with The Gap series. I have read them multiple times. In this series, he creates another deep and complex world, with no weird frills or extraneous verbiage. It"s a serious and far-reaching adventure and very well worth the trip. After all, what if YOU were thrust into the role of hero? We all think we would be brave and awesome, but really, it is most likely we would be at best, reluctant characters in a play we might not want to be in.........

I enjoyed the series, but as a Donaldson fan didn't feel it was up to his usual efforts. the world building as always was great, and Brick was fantastic as always as well

Enjoyable listen

Donaldson at his best … the most fun I’ve had with a series since Morant’s Need. Bravo! Performed beautifully as well!

This series is freaking awesome. Better than I could have imagined, and like all his work it is completely original.
