Il était une fois un roi qui avait tout, tout, tout, sauf un ami. Il en veut un, il le demande, et ses serviteurs lui amènent aussitôt Vasco, un petit berger. Le roi gâte Vasco : il lui donne à manger et tout plein de cadeaux. Vasco est content, bien sûr, mais il n'aime pas vraiment le roi, pas comme un ami. Il décide de retourner garder ses moutons.
Le roi le ramène là-haut sur la colline, mais les moutons n'y sont pas. Il faut les attendre. Alors, le roi et Vasco attendent. Vasco apprend plein de choses au roi : comment faire une cabane, comment faire du feu et comment manger des orties... C'est trop bien, Vasco et le roi deviennent de vrais amis !
