In this episode of "Sampling," the complexities of sampling in research are explored, drawing an intriguing parallel to casual weekend trips to Costco for free samples. This analogy sets the stage for a deeper discussion on the statistical methods and challenges involved in sampling populations for research purposes. The intricacies of statistical inference are unpacked, highlighting the crucial differences between a sample and a population, and emphasizing the importance of accurate sampling to derive meaningful conclusions about larger groups.

Listeners will find an engaging segment on the implications of the Racial Justice Act and how statistical evidence is increasingly used in legal contexts to demonstrate discrimination. The conversation extends to a real-world application by recounting the 2000 U.S. presidential election, highlighting how sampling errors can lead to major national confusion

Throughout the episode, intuitive examples are used to explain why sampling is not just a matter of picking randomly but requires careful consideration to avoid bias and ensure representativeness.

This richly layered discussion not only sheds light on the technical aspects of sampling but also emphasizes its significance in everyday decision-making processes, from law to grocery shopping.

100+ Stars! - If You Were Afraid of Stats, Meet Dr. Brad, a Safer Relatable Educator

So, I took stats in undergrad. Got a C. I wasn’t necessarily a fan of math. So stats couldn’t be better. But I did better in stats then. But I still didn’t like it. Brad makes you like stats. He explains it in such a wonderful way and has a soothing coolness about him that makes you understand it because he’s so down to earth. I decided to get better on stats because I just got accepted to a doctoral program that really suits my life mission and stats is a huge part of the research I will need to do my dissertation and future scholarly research. So like it or not, you got a master stats as a researcher. I listen to his podcast over and over and over again. I love that he provided it for free but it is so great that I would pay for it. I listen to it over and over again. I want it to stick in my brain. And it has. He provides a lot of real word examples and makes the information easy to understand because he’s great at explaining the context. And you can really email him and he responds back. And gave me the PowerPoint that went with the lectures that made it even better. It took a minute for me to email him because I was so busy. By that time I had listened to the episodes so many times to wear as soon as I saw the slides, it made the learning stick even more. What an amazing podcast. I honor him for putting out his body of work. I would give it 100 stars if it was possible.

Great for a recap if starting grad school after years out of school

I’m currently in grad school, taking a data analytics course. I am trying to remember what I learned in calculus and statistics back in undergrad, so I’ve been listening to this podcast. It’s been 10+ years. Professor Fulton does a great job explaining statistics in a clear and accessible manner.
