Publisher's summary

A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about...farming????

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body.

Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here.

Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I’m not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace...but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it’s probably fine.

Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her.

A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens...right?

The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 16 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Between film, television, literature, and audio—2022 could easily be proclaimed the Year of the Fantasy, much to the delight of fans among us. But when it came to picking the best of the best, the glut of fantastic content also significantly increased the CR (challenge rating). This year’s winner edged ahead of the rest thanks to its atmospheric, suck-you-in (pun intended) audio experience, but every performance on this list transported us.

Worth it!

I never write reviews and I don't normally buy books with very few reviews. I took a chance on this one based on the few reviews that were available and I'm so glad I did. it was a fun read with a ton of heart.

One of the best books of the year!

This book was a spontaneous buy for me but it was worth every penny! Characters were unique and delightful with a wonderful twist on a cultivation novel. I eagerly await the next book in the series. This author has definitely entered my buy on sight list. To the author I eagerly await your next masterpiece and thank you.

So much fun!

Ever since the day I heard the announcement that Beware of Chicken was getting an Audiobook form I was excited like a kid waiting for Christmas.

And boy it did not disappoint in the slightest.

At first it was a tad strange to listen to rather than just read but it quickly grew on me (after all I think It’s the only thing I’ve listen to). Listening to it I feel so peaceful.

An absolute banger and I can’t wait for the next one!

Perfect mix of slice of life/comedy/cultivation

Top notch narration!

Very well written and no wasted story line or extra fluff just for a word count.

Im not sure how to really get into how good and fun this book was without spoilers...

so I'll say just get it!!! too worth the credit

A relaxing story

I put off reading this title on RoyalRoad because reviews painted the picture of an unserious comedy. I usually avoid comedy progression series because they played up gags too much, and would often forego other important story telling essentials like character development. Of course a story with the title 'Beware of Chicken' would surely be a gag comedy and follow the same trend, right? Wrong. I have never thought I would be so invested in the development of a chicken. Most of the characters inspire empathy from the reader and, though many of them do not get too much screen time, I look forward to seeing the story through the eyes of every single one. Some characters do not change much from when they are introduced but Jin and the chicken grow and change in a realistic way in response to their life in the Azure Hills.

The comedy has moments where I would literally laugh out loud but for the most part the humor is subdued and comes from the absurdity of the situations rather than knee slapping jokes. The obvious jokes are definitely there, but they are not overblown like I thought they would be. I often found myself smiling for upwards of ten minutes at a time just enjoying the story.

Amazing Book!

This audiobook is so good. It totally flips the cultivation troupe on its head. The performance is top notch.

A great xianxia parody slice-of-life

If you enjoy comedy, slice-of-life, and wuxia/xianxia stories, I highly recommend this book series. The world is a typical Chinese cultivation fantasy filled with all of the usual tropes from arrogant bullies to overpowered heroes to hidden evil plots threatening to take over the martial arts world. Only, our protagonist tries to stay as far as possible from all of that and it makes this story so much better because of it. This is a light-hearted story about a guy who just wants to live on his farm... and also his chicken who can cut off heads in a single stroke.

My only issue is with Travis Baldree's pronunciation of names starting with the letter "R," of which he says using a "J" or "Zh" sound. In all of my experience with Mandarin and Cantonese, I've never heard anyone pronounce a name like "Ren" as "Zhen," so it really bothers me the way he says it. Other than that, everything else is fine.
