  • The Cult of Two: How Covert Narcissists Use Mind Control in Relationships with Rachel Bernstein LMFT
    May 14 2026

What if the most controlling relationship you've ever heard of isn't happening in a compound somewhere, but behind closed doors in an ordinary home?

In this episode, Renee sits down with Rachel Bernstein, one of the country's leading cult interventionists and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience. Together they unpack one of the most eye-opening parallels in psychology: the stunning overlap between cult tactics and covert narcissistic relationships.

If you've ever felt like you needed permission to exist in your own relationship — this episode will explain why.

    In this conversation, you'll discover:

    - Why a marriage or partnership can function as a "cult of two"

    - How covert narcissists use the same mind control techniques as cult leaders

    - Why intermittent gratification is just as addictive as gambling — and keeps you trapped

    - Why leaving feels like abandonment — and why that feeling is by design

    - How to start trusting your own inner voice again after years of gaslighting

Rachel has worked with the Department of Justice, appeared in the Starz documentary Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult and Netflix series Unwell and How to Become a Cult Leader, and has likely spoken with more cult survivors than anyone in the history of her field.

This is one of those conversations that makes everything suddenly make sense.

  • What If They Aren't a Covert Narcissist — Now What
    May 10 2026

One of the most paralyzing questions I hear from people in these relationships is not "how do I leave?" It is this: What if I'm wrong?

What if they aren't actually a covert narcissist? What if you walk away from someone who genuinely loves you — and you were misreading everything all along?

In this episode, we sit with that question honestly. Because you deserve more than just reassurance. You deserve to actually think this through.

    We talk about:

    • Why the "what if I'm wrong" fear has so much power over you — and why that is not a coincidence
    • Why you do not need a diagnosis to validate your pain or to make a decision about your life
    • How good people can still be bad partners — and what that actually looks like in real relationships
    • The four questions to ask yourself when you are stuck in self-doubt
    • Why losing the ability to trust yourself is one of the deepest wounds of covert narcissistic abuse
    • The most important question you may have never asked yourself: What if I'm right?

If you have spent months or years wondering whether what you are experiencing is real — this episode is for you.

  • Why You Can’t Move On After Covert Narcissistic Abuse | Betrayal Trauma Explained with Dr. Debi Silber
    May 7 2026

Why is it so hard to move on after covert narcissistic abuse? Why can betrayal trauma continue affecting you years—or even decades—later?

In this powerful conversation, Renee Swanson sits down with betrayal trauma expert Dr. Debi Silber to explore the deep emotional, physical, and psychological impact of betrayal in covert narcissistic relationships.

Dr. Debi explains why betrayal is a unique form of trauma, how Post Betrayal Syndrome affects survivors, and why healing from covert narcissistic abuse requires more than simply “moving on.” Together, Renee and Dr. Debi discuss the loss of trust, the breakdown of self, nervous system dysregulation, chronic symptoms, emotional triggers, and the patterns that keep survivors stuck for years.

They also dive into the five stages of betrayal recovery and what true transformation looks like after emotional abuse.

If you’ve struggled with self-doubt, rumination, hypervigilance, inability to trust, emotional exhaustion, or feeling like you lost yourself in a covert narcissistic relationship, this episode will help you understand why—and what healing can actually look like.

    In this episode:

    • Betrayal trauma and covert narcissistic abuse
    • Why you can’t “just move on”
    • Post Betrayal Syndrome symptoms

love this podcast can finally get some form of validation for what I was experiencing.

Empowering

Renee has lived it and done the research. Just the realization that the problematic things that were going on in my relationship that I thought were unique to my ex were not. Other people experienced the same type of behavior and habits that I did and there’s a reason and a name for it and you are not alone. Narcissistic abuse can make you feel so isolated and even guilty for staying but this is a community that understands and provides not only support but the knowledge you need to deal with it whether you decide to stay or ultimately leave.

Thank you for validating what we survivors go thru. It’s so painful to have it allll reflected back and see what’s actually happening but it becomes empowering eventually.

Wow, I can’t say enough about this podcast. As someone who has been married to a covert narc for 16 years Renee Swanson covers all the bases and checks all the boxes on CN. I had my doubts if my wife was really a CN but after listening to a few episodes I’m as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow that this is exactly what I’m dealing with. So accurate it’s scary.
