  • Ep 6 - Race and alcohol addiction treatment with Sohan Sahota
    Aug 22 2022

In this episode we speak to Sohan Sahota, managing director of BAC-IN, a Nottingham based, specialist drug and alcohol recovery support service for individuals, families and young adults from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.

This is an extremely important conversation. The All Party Parliamentary Group of The Treatment of Addiction in the UK recently highlighted that 92% of all people in treatment for addiction are recorded as white, showing an alarming inequality within the addiction treatment services, which impacts BAME communities across the entire country, particularly women of colour.

    In this episode, we discussed:

    • The experience of BAME communities dealing with substance misuse disorders in the UK
    • The impact of inadequate addiction services and barriers for BAME people
    • The BAC-IN culturally responsive model and why it’s so important

In this episode, we discuss topics some listeners may find disturbing such as addiction, racial trauma, suicide and drug abuse. This is an extremely important conversation and we hope you enjoy listening.

  • Ep 5 - The Language of Addiction with Jeremy Jacobs
    Aug 9 2022

In this episode, we interviewed serial entrepreneur, Jeremy Jacobs MBA. A business mentor and consultant, and presenter of the podcast “How Not To Run a Business”, Jeremy is honest about the challenges he’s faced running a business and dealing with substance misuse, and talks openly about his journey to a recent ADHD diagnosis.

    We discussed:

    • The cultural impact of addiction in the gay community
    • The impact that language can have on how we associate with being sober
    • His personal experiences with addiction, and how he moved to drinking in moderation

Jeremy’s experience with ADHD and substance use as a way to get a dopamine hit is something we’re sure many listeners will relate to, and we also discuss the language of addiction and recovery from a perspective some may find triggering or at odds with their own experiences.

Through this podcast, we aim to look at substance misuse, addiction and recovery through the eyes of many different people, including those who have found a different path that works for them.

We hope you enjoy this conversation around the language of addiction.
