  • A Fair Barbarian by Frances Hodgson Burnett ~ Full Audiobook [romance]
    Jul 4 2026
A Fair Barbarian by Frances Hodgson Burnett audiobook. Genre: romance Set in the proper English village of Slowbridge, A Fair Barbarian begins when Octavia Bassett, a wealthy young American from Nevada, arrives to stay with her quiet and conventional aunt, Miss Belinda. Octavia is beautiful, warmhearted, and completely untroubled by the rules that govern local society, and her bright clothes, easy manners, and frank conversation send the village into a state of fascinated alarm. At the center of that world stands Lady Theobald, the grand guardian of Slowbridge respectability, whose opinions shape everyone around her, especially her shy granddaughter Lucia Gaston. As Octavia befriends Lucia and moves through teas, visits, and whispered judgments, her very presence starts to expose the stiffness, snobbery, and hidden longings beneath the town's polished surface. Romantic complications begin to form as admirers circle, old expectations are challenged, and Lucia's future becomes entangled with questions of class and personal courage. Light, witty, and sharply observant, the novel uses culture clash and social comedy to explore independence, kindness, and the quiet power of a young woman who refuses to be trimmed to fit other people's idea of propriety. • Oedipus Rex by Sophocles ~ Full Audiobook [tragedy]
    Jul 3 2026
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles audiobook. Genre: tragedy In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, the proud and celebrated king of Thebes faces a crisis that threatens both his city and his own sense of identity. A deadly plague has fallen over the land, and Oedipus, determined to save his people, vows to uncover the cause. His search leads him into a tense and increasingly dangerous investigation tied to an old, unresolved crime. As he questions witnesses, consults prophets, and clashes with those closest to him, Oedipus reveals himself as a ruler of fierce intelligence, courage, and stubborn will. Around him stand Queen Jocasta, whose loyalty is shadowed by fear, and the blind seer Tiresias, whose words challenge everything Oedipus believes about truth and power. What begins as a royal duty becomes a relentless pursuit of knowledge, where each answer opens a darker question. With its tightly woven plot, emotional intensity, and powerful themes of fate, pride, blindness, and self-discovery, this ancient drama remains one of the most gripping and influential works in world literature. • Antigone by Sophocles ~ Full Audiobook [tragedy]
    Jul 2 2026
Antigone by Sophocles audiobook. Genre: tragedy In Sophocles' Antigone, the royal house of Thebes is left shattered after a brutal civil war in which Antigone's two brothers die fighting on opposite sides. Their uncle, King Creon, takes the throne and issues a harsh decree: one brother will be honored with burial, while the other is to be left unburied as a traitor. Antigone, driven by loyalty to her family and obedience to divine law, cannot accept this command. Her quiet but determined sister Ismene fears the consequences, while Creon becomes increasingly rigid in defending the authority of the state. As Antigone acts on her convictions, the conflict grows beyond a private act of mourning into a fierce struggle over justice, power, duty, and conscience. Haemon, Creon's son and Antigone's betrothed, is caught between love and obedience, and the people of Thebes watch as pride hardens every position. With stark emotional power, Antigone explores the cost of moral defiance and the danger of inflexible rule, creating a tense and deeply human drama about what happens when personal honor collides with political law. I've now listened to several of these 800+ (and growing) episodes/books, and sampled many more. They are read well, for the most part, and cover a broad range of topics, authors and time periods. There are both fiction and non-fiction, children's, YA and adult titles. I assume all are in the public domain, whether by lapsed or expired copyright. A number of the series' titles are otherwise unavailable for free through Audible, but the edition for sale on Audible will likely be a better reading or translation. I haven't checked, but some of the more obsure titles are likely not available at all. Some have attributions to Librivox, but a variety of sources seem to be drawn from. The biggest drawback, due to the podcast/episode structure of the collection, is that you can't search by title or author, only by upload date. You must load page after page until you find (or don't find) a title or author you're hoping is in the collection. But what do you want for FREE? There are both diamonds and lumps of coal in this mine. You just have to keep digging until you find your diamonds.
