Step into the rich history and culture of Mother Russia with this classic collection by esteemed writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky. With his penchant for gripping prose and powerful themes that unmasked the social struggles and intellectual clashes of his day, this audiobook collection brings his work to life for the contemporary listener.

With a rich narration that gives justice to Dostoyevsky’s brilliance, you’ll discover how this legendary author became one of the major thinkers and creative visionaries of the 19th century.

Inside this collection, you’ll discover:

  • The Brothers Karamazov, a deeply moving philosophical novel that grapples with timeless themes of faith, freedom, and morality while providing a fascinating window into Russian life at the turn of the late 1800s.
  • Crime and Punishment, a gripping drama and tragedy that paints a stark picture of poverty, the lengths some men go to escape it, and the psychological toll it leaves in its wake.
  • The Idiot, an enduring attempt by Dostoyevsky to portray "the positively good and beautiful man” as he offers a redeeming message about true Christian love.
  • Notes from the Underground, an existentialist novel that expertly weaves riddles and wordplay to explore questions of suffering, freedom, and utopianism.

I bought this collection for Crime and Punishment and almost couldn’t finish it. The narrator ruins the book entirely. His failure at Russian accents as well as misplaced emphasis almost makes it sound like an AI voice doing a cheep infomercial.

Terrible narration

Narration/performance is probably best a 4.5/5 but I gave 5 due to the large number of characters/voices/accents required to tell this story! Now when I read the physical books, I hear his voices and accents in my head!
I’ll admit I often fell asleep while listening, but that was always intentional. I’m not sure at what point during The Brothers Karamazov it was, but there came a point when I chose the audiobook over tv, streaming, and social media. The night I finished TBK I was walking outside in the cold and walked for nearly 5 miles without knowing because I was so engrossed in the conclusion of the trial!
I also liked to make bookmarks for phrases and words for further research later.
It was enjoyable and educational.

Dostoyevsky’s books are a must read. The narrator eases through his works with theatrical dialogue and an alluring tone.

Captivating collection and great listen

I downloaded this for Crime & Punishment but got a bonus three additional books by a classic writer. Audio version is really good and much easier to follow along versus reading the hard copy.

Four books for the price of one!

I was provided a copy of the audiobook for review purposes. However, all opinions are my own.

I consider Dostoyevsky’s works intimidating classic literature. However, the narrator in this collection, Michael Harding, does a wonderful job of bringing life into these stories. Harding does a great job bringing out the characters’ personality and makes the stories flow.

The collection contains The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, the Idiot, and Notes from the Underground. With that being said the audiobook is a bit lengthy but I recommend breaking the audiobook up into chunks. Listen to one book in the collection at a time and you will have a much more enjoyable experience.

I recommend this audiobook to readers who are intimidated by large classic tomes.
