Significant Others

By: Team Coco
  • Summary

  • Did you know that the novel "Lolita" would not exist if Vladimir Nabokov’s wife hadn’t stopped her husband from burning the manuscript? Or that Gandhi learned his legendary method of passive resistance from his wife? Or that the person responsible for Maya Angelou’s genre-defining memoir was her good friend James Baldwin? Significant Others is a narrated, nonfiction podcast about folks just beyond the spotlight of history. Each episode tells the story of a talented, difficult and little-known individual who altered the destiny of their better-known partner, child, sibling, or friend, and impacted the world they left behind. Narrated and written by Liza Powel O’Brien and featuring the voices of Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, Jameela Jamil, Rita Wilson, Timothy Olyphant, Lisa Kudrow and many more.

First listen, first rate topic and story

I really enjoyed this story! Being a bit of history nut, myself, I've always wanted the back story to historical figures or even events that caused those people or happenings to become the history that we know. Not knowing much beyond the Wiki version of Tolstoy, and the few books of his I have read, I found this very enlightening. I hope you continue narrating and finding good people in the speaking roles to help you bring the stories to life, Nick and Megan did outstanding jobs! Please, PLEASE continue this cast!

This Podcast is amazing, seriously a genius idea!

This is seriously one of the best podcasts I've heard in a while!
the promise is beautiful, and I've learned so much about history and these lost stories of the significant people who really deserve to be known and heard!

Love listening to these unique perspectives

It's so interesting to hear about these other sides to very well-known figures in history. It gives a much more holistic view of these people, that they were, in fact, human as well and dealing with their own limitations. lt's such a crucial light to shine, because much of history/humanity is lost simply due to who is in charge of telling the story. By adding different perspectives, these people become much less distant, taken off their pedestals, and given a chance to be seen as the everyday, imperfect humans that we all are.

Easy listening, love it!

This is such a cool concept and I love Liza’s voice! She’s got a very calming/podcast-worthy tone, very easy to listen to. The Mary Lincoln story and recap episode with Conan was very entertaining!
