Hemingway Word for Word

By: Arnold Sabatelli
  • Summary

  • An analysis of Hemingway's stories and novels based on my many years of reading and writing about Hemingway and teaching him to high school and college students. I'm a writer and educator who has presented many essays at international Hemingway conferences and published articles on the nuance and complexity of his work. I put special emphasis on how his work echoes thinkers like Carl Jung and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, paying little attention to the deeds and misdeeds of his life, trying to ignore the tremendous shadow these cast on his art. • Episode 9 "Big Two-Hearted River Pt. I
    Aug 2 2023

I take a close look at the first part of Hemingway's masterful story, "Big Two-Hearted River," that ends the collection, In Our Time, reflecting on the way the story ties together many earlier stories from the collection and again focuses on the power of artistic understanding to help contend with complex human emotion.

  • Episode 8: "Soldier's Home"
    Apr 7 2023

In this episode I take a deep dive into "Soldier's Home," Hemingway's complex look at PTSD, likely derived from his own experiences of being wounded in WWI, and suddenly being back home in Oak Park.
