I adored “Fever Pitch.” In 1992, we lived in Zurich, Switzerland. We had a satellite dish that carried Sky Sports, but it didn’t really show much. Then suddenly the Premier League appeared.

My life changed forever. Paul McCarthy’s audiobook captures perfectly just how big a sensation the Premier League was (coupled serendipitously with the new rule prohibiting goalies from handling back passes).

Suddenly, I could augment my dear Grasshopper Club (a Zurich football team) with a steady diet of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and more.

McCarthy explains just how much this transformed sports broadcasting. Before the Premier League, television didn’t show many live matches. Now, we had loads. Moreover, McCarthy chronicles the games, players, and managers expertly because he covered them live as a senior football correspondent.

I wish now he would write a sequel, comprising 2004-2025. I would buy it immediately!

“Fever Pitch” is pitch perfect
