In 1908, near Folsom, New Mexico, a cowboy discovered the remains of a herd of extinct giant bison. By examining flint points embedded in the bones, archeologists later determined that a band of humans had killed and butchered the animals 12,450 years ago. This discovery vastly expanded America's known human history but also revealed the long-standing danger Homo sapiens presented to the continent's evolutionary richness.

Distinguished scholar Dan Flores's ambitious history chronicles the epoch in which humans and animals have coexisted in the "wild new world" of North America—a place shaped both by its own grand evolutionary forces and by momentous arrivals from Asia, Africa, and Europe. With portraits of iconic creatures such as mammoths, horses, wolves, and bison, Flores describes the evolution and historical ecology of North America like never before.

In thrilling narrative style, informed by genomic science, evolutionary biology, and environmental history, Flores celebrates the astonishing bestiary that arose on our continent and introduces the complex human cultures and individuals who hastened its eradication, studied America's animals, and moved heaven and earth to rescue them. Eons in scope and continental in scale, Wild New World is a sweeping yet intimate Big History of the animal-human story in America.

I'm a huge fan of Dan flores's books, but the reader on this one was absolutely insufferable for me. he sounds like a cross between an old-timey newspaper salesman and somebody trying to get 3rd graders excited about content that is above their level. the content of this book is incredible and I really wish that Dan would read his books himself because after listening to him on podcasts I think that he would be best for it. however maybe he just doesn't want to. in this case though the person reading the book ruined it for me, so I returned it and bought a hard copy

Amazing book, but the narrator..............

Flores does a great job tackling a huge project. This book will change your perspective on North American fauna and man’s relationship with the natural world. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, the narrator wasn’t just bad, his style insulted and detracted from Flores’ work. The narration is more for children’s books, not scientific nonfiction. If you have time, read the book. Otherwise you will have to suffer through the worst reading possible.

Amazing Book. Awful Narrator.

This narrator brutalized an otherwise entertaining and informational book. What a mess. I would buy this book again for twice the current price if it were narrated by Flores himself.

Why do authors let actors narrate their books?

This story is incredible but I cannot listen to this recording without falling asleep! Get the writer Dan Flores to read the book please. I’ve never listened to something so emotionless and boring. ✌️

The guy reading this book sounds so disconnected from the literature. Why wouldn’t you have Dan Flores read his own work?

Who is this guy reading?
