Some Stories Where Great and Some Where Ok.

Like any short story collection there are gonna be some hit and misses. Some short stories felt like the begging to a longer story (Persephone by Lev Grossman), which is not what makes a good short story in my opinion. A short story should be self contained and explore everything it can in the limited amount of pages. What you lose in space you gain in filling every moment of the story with art. Most stories left with an open conclusion leading you to draw out your thoughts as a reader, and sometimes this is great, but other times like in The Garden by Tomi Champion-Adeyemi I was left feeling not much at all, the story didn’t try and leave me with much of anything to draw a conclusion or think about after.

But some stories did really stand out, Alix E. Harrows, The Six Deaths of the Saint took its short word count and filled the story with artful langue. This short story read more like a poem of Shaksprea than a traditional story and I loved how it showed a unique writing style you just can’t do affectively with longer media but can work to your advantage with shorter stories. And Undercover by Tamsy Muir is fantastically gory and tells a whole story and does amazing world building in so short a time.

Overall I would recommend this book, you may find you like some of the stories I didn’t and I think this is a great way to explore all different types of writing styles and content in a short amount of time.
