You were born alone.

You will live alone.

You will die alone.

This is the burden of the assassin.

A master assassin craves one thing above all else: a normal everyday life.

Trained to be a killer from the age of 11, Peter has never known the things the average person takes for granted. He has always been an asset.

Burned by the CIA and now occupying their secret hit list, he works overseas as a Ronin, living a solitary life in hiding.

But someone knows where he is.

A strange man arrives at his door offering Peter the chance of a real life. "Get this done and you can be free," he is told.

All he has to do is complete a three-name kill list in one month. Make it look like a series of unfortunate accidents.

What could be so complicated about that?

Orphan x on steroids. X is a bit more believable and slightly more polished. Both good listens

Surprisingly good

At first I didn't think I would like this book, however, I was pleasantly surprised how well written it is! The concepts are Doherty from any other "agency" thriller I've read/ heard. Well worth the money and time spent listening.

Outstanding

Great story, excellent narrator. I bought books 2 & 3 in the series before this one was even finished

I loved this book

Like Lee Child’s Reacher and Mark Greaney’s Gray Man series, the main character is a highly trained, deadly action hero with innate skills, illegal exploits and a heart of gold (despite all the dead bodies left in their wakes — treated as necessary casualties, although there sure are a lot of them and the justification for killing them is sometimes thin).

Both Gray Man and Peter Black are orphans trained from an early age by people connected to spy agencies.

All three series have clever descriptions of tricks of the tradecraft.

Major differences: Black’s psyche takes a bigger beating than Reacher’s ever seems to, or the Gray Man does (in the two novels I’ve read in the GM series).

In fact, everything having to do with emotions (other than anger or revenge) is more detailed, sadder and more believable in this book. Black’s regrets are also more prominent.

Reacher is presented as smarter than the others and he has more knowledge about combat, getting information out of people and (nonelectronic) surveillance. Gray Man seems the most skilled overall (but not by much). The depiction of Black is somewhat more well-rounded than the other two, with more descriptions of more aspects of his life in addition to the spycraft/warcraft/espionage that the all three series concentrate on.

I found it a bit easier to understand the descriptions of action scenes in the Black book.

All in all, I’m more interested in Black than the other two, but I want to read through all three series.

Compared to Reacher & The Gray Man

It was slow at first, then took hold and got really good. I was surprised at a few turns in the book. I won’t say what they are so you may enjoy!

A bit slow at first.. but got much better
