Während einer Expedition zum Krakatau-Archipel wurde die Nautilus beschädigt und Kapitän Nemo schwer verletzt. Erst nach Wochen erwacht er aus dem Koma und erkennt, in welcher Lage er sich befindet. Der holländische Geschäftsmann Pieter de Bruyn hält die Mannschaft der Nautilus gefangen und verlangt von Nemo, dass er ihn und seine Männer zur Insel Krakatau bringt. De Bruyn besitzt Hinweise auf den versunkenen Kontinent Lemuria, einer davon führt zum Vulkan Krakatau. Nemo willigt notgedrungen zu dieser Expedition ein, aber er weiß um das Risiko. Bereits vor zwei Monaten stand der Vulkan kurz vor einer Explosion und es gibt weitere Zeichen, dass ein neuer Ausbruch unmittelbar bevorsteht. Eine risikoreiche Suche beginnt.
