Written in 516, The Rule of Saint Benedict for monastic living has been soul-inspiring for a countless number of people–not only monks, nuns and priests, but also a considerable number of lay people. It covers matters of doctrine, the structure of the monastery as the House of God, and observance of the Divine Office. The Rule gives a fascinating insight into the standards and behaviour expected of monks in their everyday lives. It remains notable for embodying the concept of a written constitution and influencing the shape of medieval Europe.

Today the Rule, with its universal message, offers a deep and practical spirituality to all people desiring a good life.

I originally picked this up after learning both bead Griffiths and Thomas Merton were monastics in the Benedict tradition. this made me very curious about what the tradition was so I picked up the rule of Benedict to learn more. while there are really great general words of wisdom here such as the chapter on humility and a few others which tend to guide the common Man, the book is exclusively focused on rules to run a monastery which are useful if you choose to run them on a stereo and be a part of a monastery but not useful otherwise.

I don't think I'd really recommend this book to those that aren't interested in becoming monks but it is a useful footnote to be aware that if you are and shouldn't be coming among or curious about what it's like to become a monk these are some of the rules that are typically obeyed in the western tradition of manassasism which is most popularly recognized in the Saint Benedict tradition

a wonderful book for those aspiring to belongs
