In 1865, orphaned Daisy Francois takes a position as housemaid at a midwestern Wisconsin castle and finds that the reclusive and eccentric Gothic authoress inside hides more than the harrowing tales in her novels. With women disappearing from the area and a legend that seems to parallel these eerie circumstances, Daisy is thrust into a web that may threaten to steal her sanity, if not her life.

In the present day, Cleo Clemmons is hired by the grandson of American aristocratic family the Tremblays to help his matriarchal grandmother face her hoarding in the dilapidated Castle Moreau. But when Cleo uncovers more than just the woman's stashes of collectibles, a century-old mystery of disappearance, insanity, and the dust of the old castle's curse threaten to rise again, and this time, leave no one alive to tell the sordid tale.

Fan-favorite Jaime Jo Wright draws listeners into a seamlessly woven dual-time tale of suspense, mystery, romance, and redemption.

What a wonderful story that even in the darkest most twisted moments, there is hope and redemption and light ! And the narration was spot on. Sara Farrington is one of my favorite audiobook readers. She vibes perfectly with each story.

Overall I disappointed in the story. I was drawn into it and needed to know how it finished but it ended up being a little predictable. It isn’t that long of a book but I felt like it dragged on quite a bit in the middle. The main character Chloe was too emotional and in her own head most of the time and it got old. I also felt like her swooning over Deacon was a bit over the top.

Overall this is a readable book. There are parts I love. The narrator was very good as always. The story, well, it just lacked something. The relationship between the two lead characters and their counterparts were both disconnected, then unconvincingly passionate. There are evils and monsters but eluded to rather than really explained. Sorry if I'm giving too much away, this book could have been so much better. The castle has secrets that are discovered, yet not thoroughly explained. I think that's the thing about this book. It has really great concepts but lacks depth in execution.

Figured out what was going on, but it didn’t ruin it. I was just hoping I was right lol. I was so sad when the book was over!

Quite a ride!

It was a little hard to follow at first because the time bounces a bit. But once the story got going it was not an issue. The story was great, but the narrator was just ok. Overall, definitely worth the credit.

Great story, ok narration
