Plain Talk About Plastic Surgery

By: Dr. Elizabeth Kerner
  • Summary

  • I'm your host, Dr. Elizabeth Kerner. I hope you'll think of me as your sister, the plastic surgeon, who will tell you like it really is. I have been in practice in Plano & Dallas, TX for over 30 years, and I am American Board of Plastic Surgery certified. During my career I have had the honor to serve over 13,000 patients. Each episode will focus on one area of plastic surgery in depth, discussing the anatomy, the operative technique, risks, potential complications, and most importantly, who would be a good candidate and who would not be a good candidate.

  • Lumps, and Bumps, and Moles, Oh My!
    May 26 2023

Thank you for joining me! Today we're going to talk about all the little lumps, and bumps, and moles that bring people into my office.

In this episode I'll explain the different types of lumps, bumps, and moles that we all seem to pick up as we age, including how they form, how they are best removed, and what differentiates an aesthetic concern from a true health and wellbeing concern.

We cover a lot of interesting ground in this episode, and answer many of the questions people have:

What is the difference between a lipoma and a sebaceous cyst?

Is surgery the only option to remove a lipoma, or should a treatment like Kybella be considered?

    Are lipomas benign?

How can sebaceous cysts be removed?

Which sebaceous cysts can be removed in-office, and which should be removed in the operating room?

    What are dermoids?

Are glandular tumors benign? What about dermatofibromas?

Can moles be removed without scarring?

Are skin checks to screen for skin cancer really necessary, and how often should a skin check be done?

As a plastic surgeon with over 32 years of experience, I've addressed the questions and concerns of thousands of patients, and I can tell you that everyone has questions when it comes to plastic surgery, and breast implants are no exception. That's why I made this episode!

  • What to Know About Breast Implants
    Feb 26 2023

Thank you for joining me! Today we're going to talk about breast implants; how they came to be, and what they are like now.

In this episode I'll explain the different types of breast implants, from their simple (and often problematic) beginnings, to the state of the art implants currently available today that I use in my own practice.

We cover a lot of interesting ground in this episode, and answer many of the questions people have about breast implants:

What are the differences between silicone and saline breast implants?

What materials are breast implants made from, and is one type of breast implant widely considered to be safer than the others?

Are smooth or textured breast implants considered better?

Do all breast implants fail over time, and what are the risks and complications when a breast implant of each type fails?

What type and material of breast implant looks best on each woman's body type?

What is my favorite type of breast implant to use in my practice? (Spoiler alert: I love the Ideal Implant, and I'll explain why I think you'll love it too!)

Is wrinkling always an issue with saline implants… and does it have to be?

Health studies and data of past, older style breast implants from the '70s, '80s and '90s no longer really apply to today's 5th-generation style of implants. Why is that, and what changed?

As a plastic surgeon with over 32 years of experience, I've addressed the questions and concerns of thousands of patients, and I can tell you that everyone has questions when it comes to plastic surgery, and breast implants are no exception. That's why I made this episode!

In this episode I'll explain what breast lift surgery is, and how breast lift surgery works with the human anatomy to give an ideal result.

We cover a lot of interesting ground in this episode, and answer many of the questions people have about breast lifts:

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction?

What are the types of breast lift surgery and how do surgical techniques differ in each type?

Who is a good candidate for a breast lift? Who is a poor candidate for a breast lift?

Why weight gain or weight loss after a breast lift is a problem for long lasting results.

Why is a preoperative mammogram so important before a breast lift?

What are my current thoughts on the use of GalaFLEX in a breast lift?

What are the risks involved in a breast lift?

What is scarring like after a breast lift, and what are the important considerations regarding scarring in a breast lift?

As a plastic surgeon with over 32 years of experience, I've addressed the questions and concerns of thousands of patients, and I can tell you that everyone has questions when it comes to plastic surgery, and breast lifts are no exception. That's why I made this episode!
