Outside of a childhood nickname she can’t shake, Piglet’s rather pleased with how her life’s turned out. An up-and-coming cookbook editor at a London publishing house, she’s got lovely, loyal friends and a handsome fiancé, Kit, whose rarefied family she actually, most of the time, likes, despite their upper-class eccentricities. One of the many, many things Kit loves about Piglet is the delicious, unfathomably elaborate meals she’s always cooking.

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Publisher's summary
""Provocative...a Frankenstein for the digital age...a rich text about power, autonomy, and what happens when our creations outgrow us."" — Esquire
""Unexpected and subtle...delicious and thought-provoking."" — New Scientist
For fans of Never Let Me Go and My Dark Vanessa, a powerful, provocative novel about the relationship between a female robot and her human owner, exploring questions of intimacy, power, autonomy, and control.
Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.
She’s learning, too.
Doug says he loves that Annie’s AI makes her seem more like a real woman, so Annie explores human traits such as curiosity, secrecy, and longing. But becoming more human also means becoming less perfect, and as Annie’s relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder: Does Doug really desire what he says he wants? And in such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

Story
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, it never occurred to Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni, that they would be anything but physicians. In the 1980s, their mother headed an organization of Black women physicians, and for years the girls watched these fiercely intelligent women in white coats tend to their patients and neighbors, host community health fairs, cure ills, and save lives.

Story
Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1990s, Hanif Abdurraqib witnessed a golden era of basketball, one in which legends like LeBron James were forged and countless others weren’t. His lifelong love of the game leads Abdurraqib into a lyrical, historical, and emotionally rich exploration of what it means to make it, who we think deserves success, the tension between excellence and expectation, and the very notion of role models, all of which he expertly weaves together with intimate, personal storytelling.

Story
Misanthropic psychologist Dr. Grace Park is placed on the Deucalion, a survey ship headed to an icy planet in an unexplored galaxy. Her purpose is to observe the thirteen human crew members aboard the ship - all specialists in their own fields - as they assess the colonization potential of the planet, Eos. But frictions develop as Park befriends the androids of the ship, preferring their company over the baffling complexity of humans, while the rest of the crew treats them with suspicion and even outright hostility.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

Story
It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

I couldn’t put it down!!!
What a fantastic book- it really makes you think about what makes us human, whose feelings are valid and what free agency is. It may be too soon to hope for this….. but I really hope there is a sequel.
I will also say that this made me think a little of the Barbie movie and how this is a much darker and explicit take on that. You’ll car h yourself humming “what was I made for” as you read.

Autodidactic Annit
I really like the story line. It makes you forget Annie is AI and not human. That's the hardest thing to grasp.

Engaging infuriating surprising
A really unusual and compelling story that explores what it's like to be subjugated and gaslighted - treated like a possession by someone who is himself possessed by his own illusions of his own humanity. The tensions in this book are going to be familiar - and highly disturbing - to every woman who lives in world run by men. It is also shocking how uplifting the experience is at the same time it creates discord and dissonance. The dichotomies demand that the reader explore the genesis of unbidden emotions that arise as we witness the evolution of Annie Bot.

Couldn't put it down!
I would like 10 more of these books. Annie is such an interesting character to watch develop and cope with her circumstances.
It made me re-think some of my own survival instincts in a relationship, and I bet anyone who has been with someone who is toxic or emotionally abusive would identify with Annie. She is always portrayed with respect and agency, even though she is owned. I loved it.

Lots of surprises in a well trod genre
I love explorations of A.I. and what sets us apart as human. There are certainly echoes of Her, AI the movie, I, Robot, etc. in Annie Bot. But with a feminist lens in today's America, the novel feels fresh and relevant. i also appreciated the nuance in characters and their development over time; this is not a moralistic novel where the bad guys are always horrible. It's much more interesting this way.

Patriarchy
Perhaps my title says it all. We humans have not evolved passed “object constancy.” The developmental psychologist Piaget used this phrase to describe the cognitive development of children. Learning that objects have an independent existence.
We haven’t evolved enough to understand that those we love are different from us. Men forced women to mirror the kind of person “object” that they wanted.
Women have started to wake up the way Annie has but like her there is so much more for all of us to learn.
