Tamras’s apprenticeship as a warrior isn’t turning out quite the way she expected. Her unconventional choices lead to her crossing swords, almost literally, with Vintel, the war leader of Merin’s house. She finds herself embroiled in a power struggle she is doomed to lose, but the loss sends her on a journey that will change her destiny and decide the fate of her people.

Catherine Wilson creates a magical sense of belonging to that place. Within that, she also tells how it feels to not belong. It calls us to remember that women had, and still have, a wise and powerful place in the world.

In this book, we see Tamras’s world open from the House of Merin and its immediate environs into the lands beyond its borders. She meets other peoples, whose ways are different from those she knows. Similarly, Tamras’ inner life expands as well. The feelings within her blossom into the romantic love that will be the linchpin her life will hinge on....

So beautiful, magical nd engaging. My wife and I loved listening to this and love it so much. We can't wait until the 3rd book has audio recorded. This narrator was amazing and I hope she voices the next book!

Amazing

Even if you are not a fan of fantasy genre, these books should be on your must read list. However, if you are going for the audiobook version, take she the off between the first read with Janis Ian and this one. The styles and voices are just too different and rather jarring.

Catherine! You know I adore you and your work. Always have been. And I’m elated to have seen just now that you had book 2 on audio. Waiting patiently (not so patiently) for book 3 now. Your writing and essence felt throughout the story and pages, you know, I’ve admired for ages. I’m so blessed to have relived this story as I travel through New Zealand. On ancient land listening to an ancient era that I feel I’ve shared many oaths lives in. This story has always and still awakens my warrior lifetime, both tragic and full of love and fire. Big love to you Catherine.

I got the first audiobook for free here on a whim a couple of years back. I'd never been one for romance novels, but something about the title captured my attention. I'm so glad I listened. After devouring the book, I went to look for the second audiobook, and was so disappointed to find that it didn't exist that I emailed the author (something I'd never done before) to ask if I might have overlooked it. Catherine was kind enough to respond that she hoped to one day be able to make it, and I'm so glad it finally came to fruition.

This book series has been a source of calm and reflection during a very chaotic time in my life. As a queer individual in an often hostile world, I appreciated getting to experience Tamras's journey of self-discovery and love in a world where that queerness isn't just accepted but the norm. My partner and I cherished falling asleep to the soothing tones of Janis Ian in the first book, and we're glad to find just as great a narrator in Anne Marie Lewis. We look forward to falling asleep to her as well.

Thank you Catherine for writing this book series. It means a lot to people like me. I hope you'll be able to release the third book in audiobook format some day soon.
