Organizations on a local, national and international scale are choosing the Mountain State as a location to build and expand their companies. The West Virginia Department of Economic Development works to provide resources to businesses and help improve the state’s economy by marketing West Virginia as a prosperous site and place worth investing in. It operates through many different teams that cover areas like leadership, business attraction, research and training and the work the office does with international customers. While the WVDED caters to many different economic sectors, it tries not to focus on just one when strategizing how to drive economic growth. Instead, it tries to market the state across a wide range of growing businesses. “A key element of any successful economy is the opportunity for citizens to pursue a wide and virtually unlimited array of careers,” says Mitch Carmichael, secretary of economic development for the WVDEC. “As the many new and existing companies accelerate the economic renaissance occurring in West Virginia, our focus is to facilitate the synergy necessary for a dynamic flywheel of strong and enduring job creation.” Read more: https://wvexecutive.com/west-virginias-economic-renaissance/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.  Today is Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Off-road trails inject new life into Mercer County tourism…Applications are open for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program…and hike with a pack goat on the Greenbrier River Trail…on today’s daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Mercer County leaders recently celebrated the 13th anniversary of the Pocahontas Trail System of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. The Pocahontas trails have helped muster in a slow rebirth in the western part of Mercer County after years of decline in the coal industry. “Typically we’d have folks open up a cabin here or a cabin there or expand their existing business. Now, we’re starting to see some larger investments like resorts which are four to six million dollar investments. Those are great for our area creating jobs and other opportunities for our local communities,” said Chris Zeto with the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. A ride from Bluefield to Bramwell on U.S. Route 52 will confirm the assertion. Every mile or two reveals signs catering to trail riders with lodging, ATV repairs, dealerships, restaurants or other services oriented directly to off-road enthusiasts. WVOE plans to offer 35 energy efficiency retrofit grants of up to $37,000 for local governments and 14 energy efficiency retrofit grants of up to $25,000 for rural communities serving nonprofits that improve energy efficiency and reduce energy expenses. Applications are due by June 14, 2024, and can be found at energywv.org/eecbg. Coleman is the founder of The Greenbrier Goat, a pack-goat touring company for cyclists and day hikers. He aspires to open up the majesty and wonder of the Greenbrier River Trail to all people, helping to make the trail and a day camping excursion experience accessible to those with physical disabilities. Coleman works closely with the Forest Service, the West Virginia Department of Tourism, and the Small Business Development Center. The Department of Tourism linked Coleman with Cranberry Adventures, whom he cites as his “in-state mentor,” as they also use animals to help people explore Appalachian forest trails. “We could give a chance for a group of people with less mobility, younger or older, a destination on the river trail that they could strive for that’s accessible, and they could roll into the goat powered base camp and have a safe haven, first aid, cold water, and just a place to have shelter. And meet a pack goat,” he said. You can find The Greenbrier Goat on Facebook. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.  Today is Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A donation from the Wing 2 Wing Foundation will put musical instruments in all middle schools throughout West Virginia…Longstanding companies in #YesWV evolve with the times to produce innovative products…and ALL ABOARD to the New River Gorge via Amtrak…on today’s daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History has accepted a $280,000 contribution from the Wing 2 Wing Foundation in its partnership with the Save The Music Foundation to enhance musical education in West Virginia. Secretary Randall Reid-Smith said the money will give more students an opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument by providing instruments to every middle school in all 55 counties. The Wing 2 Wing Foundation, founded by Marshall University President Brad Smith and wife Alys Smith, focuses on investments in education, entrepreneurship and the environment. The state has implemented the program in 156 schools with $40,000 worth of free instruments in each school. Despite their already impressive strategies, there are always opportunities for businesses to excel and innovate. Warwood Tool, Amsted Graphite Materials, Star Plastics and MHI RJ Aviation Inc. are four examples of innovation taking place in long standing companies, all of which have made great strides by implementing new ideas. Warwood Tool opened as a blacksmith shop in 1854. Now, the Wheeling company continues to manufacture a wide array of industrial grade tools that can be used for any purpose. Amsted Graphite Materials in Anmoore was built by the National Carbon Company in 1904 and has been a notable contributor to the carbon and graphite industries. Star Plastics, formed from its parent company SDR Plastics in 1988. The Ravenswood recycling company now specializes in custom formulated engineering grade resins and continues turning used plastic into quality products. MHI RJ in Bridgeport has been around for 33 years, the result of a merger between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the Canadair Regional Jet Series Program. It is the largest maintenance, repair and overhaul provider for CRJ and has one of the world’s largest regional aircraft bases. The Cardinal, which is best known for its Chicago to New York route, makes three stops per week at each of the three stops around the park in Hinton, Thurmond, and Prince. The stops occur on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. While The Cardinal picks up and drops off passengers, the train ride also takes passengers through New River Gorge National Park. As a result of the glass-domed passenger car, those riding the train can get unparalleled views riding through the park, the likes of which would not be seen if you drove to the park instead.
