Meet Simon Fenchurch, detective inspector working the Met’s East London beat. Honest and funny but damaged, he’s working a case that could give him answers to his deepest trauma....

The body of a young woman is found on the streets of East London, in the shadow of the City’s gleaming towers. No ID on her, just hard-earned cash. But there is no doubting the ferocity of the attack.

DI Simon Fenchurch takes charge, but as his team tries to identify her and piece together her murder, they’re faced with cruel indifference at every turn—nobody cares about yet another dead sex worker.

To Fenchurch, however, the victim could just as easily be Chloe, his daughter, abducted from outside his home and still missing 10 years on, whose memory still haunts his days and nights, his burning obsession having killed his marriage.

When a second body is found, Fenchurch must peel back the grimy layers shrouding the London sex trade, confronting his own traumatic past while racing to undo a scheme larger, more complex and more evil than anything he could possibly have imagined.

For fans of Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Alex Smith, and JD Kirk, The Hope That Kills is the novel that introduced listeners to troubled Detective Simon Fenchurch.

I started this series because I absolutely love Angus Kings narration in the J.D.Kirk series DCI Jack Logan and Robert Hoon. Perhaps that was a mistake because the character’s voices are too identical to the characters in the J.D. Kirk series without the same humor and story lines. I’ve started this series several times and I honestly can’t tell you what I liked or disliked because I keep expecting to hear the names I’ve become so familiar with when I hear the voices! Sorry if this seems like a bad review because it’s not I just can’t get into the storyline or feel interested in the characters! Since I have the series I’m going to try again! 🤞🏽🙏🏽

Perhaps the fourth time is a charm!

It was a little hard to get used to the accents used for this book. I’m hoping the next book doesn’t only focus on his looking for his daughter. The plot was great except the focus for his daughter only made it a little boring

First book. Hoping for more

Very unique, interesting story. Well-written. Good character development.

Nice combo of mystery solving and sudden action.

I'm 68 and all I can think about during the physical scenes though is, "MAN! Is our hero ever going to be in a world of hurt in 15 years when all those injuries turn into arthritis!" Ouch! Poor guy...so dedicated!

Enjoyed Mr. James's book so much I've added him to the list of my favorite authors.

Oh, and of course, Angus King is my favorite narrator. Searching for him is what lead my to this "new" author!

EXCELLENT
