Schauplatz der Geschichte ist ein kleiner Ort in Österreich um 1900, in dem der Landstreicher und Wilderer Pachler im Alkoholrausch seinen treuen Hund Krambambuli um eine Kiste Schnaps an den Förster verkauft und sich schließlich mit diesem in eine tödliche Feindschaft verstrickt. Der Hund ist hin- und hergerissen in Hundeliebe und Hundetreue zwischen altem und neuem Herrn und stirbt an diesem Konflikt in Qual und Pein. Eine traurige und bittere Tiergeschichte vom Feinsten, die das Herz zu Tränen rührt. "Die Treue ist etwas ganz Heiliges." Mehrmals verfilmt.
