Wow, I hadn't heard this information since my high school and college days over a decade ago! Listening gave me a bit of nostalgia thinking back to those days, sitting in class listening to the lecture. This brief history was absolutely textbook-worthy and could be useful to anyone studying this subject. The narrator also did a great job and was enjoyable to listen to.

I picked this up mainly for the Roman history, but I found myself completely sucked into the earlier chapters about the Etruscans. Their unusual burial customs were part of the Italian story I’d never really considered, and they set a strong foundation for everything that followed.

The transition into the Medici era was where the book really hit its stride for me. Seeing how Florence transformed into a creative powerhouse through a mix of genius and cutthroat politics made the masterpieces of Da Vinci and Michelangelo feel much more grounded in reality. It’s a fast-paced look at how a relatively small peninsula managed to dictate the cultural rhythm of the entire world.
