Natchez, 1841. As a slave girl, Jenny has always yearned for freedom, but when her master Cornelius Carson abruptly sets her free and hands her a steamboat ticket to free soil in Ohio, she is completely alone. She knows she faces a future filled with dangers. Then an old acquaintance, Walker Jackson, persuades her to return with him to Carefree, the abandoned Natchez estate of her childhood. Only one person still lives there: Esther, a slave woman. When Cornelius unexpectedly inherits the estate, Jenny finds that her life, like the estate, is taking some unexpected turns. The lives of Cornelius, Euphonia, Walker, Esther, and many others undergo startling changes. Eventually Jenny forges a new life for herself among the free people of New Orleans, but when she returns to Carefree, the ramifications of her old crime threaten both her life and the world of Carefree. Beautiful story. The writing held my attention thankfully so because the virtual voice reading was distracting at times with the mispronunciations, run-on reading and unexpected leaps forward with the story. At times it was as if several sentences or paragraphs were missed leaving gaps in the story that weren't explained or understood much later if at all.

This truly is a remarkable story about compassion and fairness extended to the enslaved. A story of a quiet abolitionist in Mississippi with an entire plantation of free people. It made one wonder how often or if stories such as this happened more often during that time. Great listen along with the other books in this series I just wish human voiceovers were used. If the story were not so compelling, I would have deleted it from my library,

Great story not thrilled about the virtual voice

Captivating story. Great depiction of the past in the south during the days of slavery. Lots of twists and turns. I couldn’t stop listening
