    This second part to Episode 3 Fighting Tech Giants - Kent V. Apple, examines Liz Coll's precedent-setting against Google - Coll v. Google.


    Dr. Kent and Ms. Coll also talk about their experiences of leading on these cases of such magnitude where collectively they are seeking more than £2.5bn in damages from Apple and Google!


    Liz Coll is the class representative in the case brought by Hausfeld. Liz’s claim is on behalf of all UK consumers and businesses who have spent money on digital content within the UK version of the Google Play Store.


    Liz alleges that Google has breached competition law by excluding competition and/or charging an unlawful level of commission on digital purchases in the Google Play Store. As a result, consumers and businesses are very likely to have suffered financial loss and may be entitled to damages of around £1bn!!!


    Liz Bio

    Liz is a consumer tech policy expert with over thirteen years’ experience of campaigning for consumers’ rights online. At Citizens Advice and Consumer Focus she led work on critical issues for consumers in the digital world like data privacy, smart home devices and online reviews. She went on to establish a global digital programme at Consumers International, where she led advocacy and research into e-commerce, consumer internet of things, AI, data privacy and the impact of platforms on consumers’ access to choice, redress and fair treatment. She has represented consumer interests at national and global policy forums including the OECD and the G20. As an independent consultant, she works with international policy makers, consumer groups and standards setters, sits on EU technology standards committees and is a strategic advisor to the UK’s Consumer and Public Interest Network. As of January 2024, Liz is also an appointed member of the LSB Legal Services Consumer Panel.

    Dr Rebecca Saunders is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Media and Society at Cardiff University, in the School of Journalism, Media and Culture.

    Her research focuses on body politics, and the impact of digital technologies on sexual culture and labor. Her first monograph Bodies of Work: the Labour of Sex in the Digital Age analysed how information and attention economies have impacted the evolution of pornographic film: both heteronormative, misogynistic output from major studios and trans and queer pornography.

    Her recent publications and current research project looking at the phenomenon of ‘sex tech’, such as sex tracking apps and smart sex toys.
