Publisher's summary

What makes the queen's young favorite turn against her?

Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, is one of the most intriguing men of the Elizabethan period. Tall and handsome, he soon becomes a ‘favorite’ at court, so close to the queen many wonder if they are lovers.

The truth is far more complex, as each has what the other yearns for. Robert Devereux longs for recognition, wealth and influence. His flamboyant naïveté amuses the ageing Queen Elizabeth, like the son she never had, and his vitality makes her feel young.

Continuing the story of the Tudors, begun in Tony Riches’ best-selling Tudor trilogy, this epic tale of loyalty, love and adventure follows Robert Devereux from his youth to his fateful rebellion.

Bad in so many ways

I blame myself that I did not realize I was purchasing historical fiction instead of a decent history of Essex so beware if you have not seen this. As such it is at simplistic and silly. I appreciated some of the cultural details of the period but the characters seem much more Twentieth Century than 16th. The author tries to develop personal details but they are silly and implausible.

The killer, however, was the florid narrator. He reads as though spinning a children’s tale such as “Little Red Riding Hood.” His female voices are ghastly and all sound the same.

His production includes very annoying sound effects— birds chirping, dishes clattering, echoing voices for correspondence. The funniest are men supposedly yelling when in distress

“Robert cursed” said at least once a chapter. Still wonder what he said. Poorly written and narrated, so I cannot recommend.

Essex

I loved this book! I knew the story of him as an adult, but the backstory was amazing. Narration by Nigel Peever was excellent. The 'experience sound' also really made it special. I was given this book free for an honest review.
