Maximillian has been given the chance to avenge his family's death: the Duke of Odoevsky has conspired in a plot against the emperor, and if Max plays his cards right, he'll be able to destroy the man who read out his family's execution order with such ecstasy. But one small mistake topples his plans, and now thousands of people caught in the clutches of terrible monsters are counting on him to save them. What choice must he make? Revenge or salvation?

Occasionally the path feels a little unclear. With what I would consider a shorter listening time for each book it almost feels like a monster of the week type of situations sometimes. But……
The story is connecting and flowing. And I like the adaptability of Max. He is a good representation of what people want a “grey Jedi” to be in my opinion. Overall he has a lightside moral compass but he doesn’t buy into the system totally, he stays skeptical, and he’s willing to be a little dark to get the job the done. Or very dark if necessary. On top of that, he isn’t just crazy overpowered, but still better than most, and can figure out how to come out on top.
I’m really enjoying this story

1 of the best lit series

I like the idea of the series but really am frustrated with how the protagonist hasn’t gotten wise to his enemies and feeds them info through… There are some magic incongruities that make me scratch my head. Are teeth harder to heal than internal organs? I suppose it’s possible.
