J. S. Dewes is back with her acclaimed and action packed Divide series (The Last Watch, The Exiled Fleet) where The Expanse meets the Night's Watch.

This program features multicast narration.

The Sentinels have rallied under the leadership of Adequin Rake, and Cavalon Mercer has uncovered the horrifying genetic solution his grandfather is about to unleash on the unsuspecting outer colonies.

Both Rake and Cavalon race against time to save the universe once again. They'll need every resource, every ally who might answer the call.

It might not be enough.

Outstanding space opera, best I’ve read in a long while. Been waiting for this for so long I had to go back and reread the first two- very much a bonus. Excellent call to add a third voice to the final; all narrators very strong. Can’t recommend this enough!

Brilliant and satisfying end to an excellent story

4.25 stars 🌟

I will say that a very small issue that I had with this book in particular was that it just completely continued onward from where it left off in the previous book. I know this is something that is quite common. Why is that an issue for me in this particular book? Well, because I read a LOT of books and there was quite a lengthy time period in between books for me. There wasn't ANY kind of overview or summary (not that I want the author to re-go over things that just occurred, but some authors can expertly throw in small things that can help the reader get back to the same head space in that particular story and world). In this series, there are a TON of things that are happening and quite a few characters that are main and center. All this to say that I felt a little lost when starting this book. But, to be fair - that was my fault. I could have easily reread my review, gone back and read the book summary - so, it is just a comment - not necessarily a bad thing.

So, to this book. This is the third and final book in this really interesting series and when I mentioned that things take off from the beginning, things definitely take off. What we learned in the last book was that there were HUGE issues in the surrounding universes and those universes were collapsing, and apparently, the universe of our main characters was the place everyone was trying to escape to. Not to mention the fact that our guys were fighting against a really bad evil character - the head of the largest pharmaceutical companies -who was doing his own form of eugenics and trying to kill off most of humanity in his own way to basically start over in the way he envisioned and creating a "better" race. The more we learned about this man, the more we realized that there wasn't ANYTHING that was off limits to him. Even going to the extent of cloning himself and passing the clones off as his own son and grandson. The man truly was evil.

So- things started from there and we had our gang of characters trying to find a way to save the human race. No biggie, right?

There is so much going on in so many different areas. There is Cavalon Mercer (the grandson) going off on an expedition to try to find research from an old and different species. Then there was Jackin and his storyline dealing with his captivity and torture. We also got to follow along with Adequin Rake- the leader who never wanted to be a leader - as she tried to figure out how in the world she was going to be able to build and lead the resistance.

There was definitely a lot of action. In the end, I think there were some things that were not resolved and we were left with several questions, but for the most part it kept my interest and made me definitely root for our "good guys."

I listened to this almost completely on audio and enjoyed the trio of narrators. The one thing that I was not clear about at the end was if there was going to be another book - even now I'm not sure. Would I continue on with this series? Absolutely.

End of the trilogy?

After reading the first two, I wasn’t sure if the third installment would measure up, but I wasn’t disappointed. Great series!

Great wrap up

I enjoyed the listen. The VAs crushed it, certainly. Although the story has one of those resolutions that kind of make you wonder where all the steps to get there went. Mostly, I noticed a lot, maybe nearly all the sci-fi elements just sort of quit about half way through. You're still in the setting sure, but there's a lot less air lock breaching, mini-sun making and sci-fi military action going after a certain point and I was well past it in the story before I really noticed. Which is fine, more on myself maybe, it adjusted my perspective on the series a bit and I think I thought I was reading/listening to a different kind of story. It's much less military sci-fi action and intrigue and a lot more character growth journey/ relationship dynamics focused, maybe a point in its favor for most.

Love this series so much. Excellent production and readings as usual from Macmillan audio. A great end to such an amazing story.
