Harley Fremont and her K-9 partner, Gemma, set out to locate a young female adult, who has gone missing while hiking a trail on the Salmon-Challis National Forest in Idaho. Once they arrive, their work is delayed several times, making Harley increasingly concerned about the fate of the young woman. Relieving some of her angst is Gemma, who befriends a trout in the Salmon River. Gemma makes return trips to play with her friend. Along the same river trail, Harley meets a Billy Joel look-alike who admires Gemma's antics.

Events occur which cause Harley and Gemma to investigate a superfund site, goblins, dying cities, newly built cities, damaged mines, a trailer park, and "Las Vegas" in Idaho. During the course of the investigation, Harley and Gemma meet two environmental activists, a reporter, and a Deputy Sheriff, who will combine to make this outing unforgettable. The end is at hand when Harley and Gemma least expect it.
