The neural net was weaving its microfibers into my cortex, just as they had done to Jason. The alien technology was giving me access to not only the ship’s computer, but also Jason’s mind. There was no pain, but an occasional muscle twitch reminded me that the neural net was exploring my synapses, making new connections and cataloging them, mapping them.

I felt the connection with Jason. It was not what I expected. It was not a verbal communication, but rather concepts, images, and emotions. Perhaps the words would come later. I relaxed and let my mind explore his, letting my thoughts go deeper, deeper into his memories. Then as though a door had slammed shut, he blocked me out. His eyes opened. He was awake.
