Katie and Mike are happily married. And it often seems as though things couldn’t possibly get any better for them. People sometimes comment that their marriage and family seem perfect. Her friends often throw the words “fairy tale” around, much to Katie’s pleasure.

So, when their little daughter Laura, decides to ask for a dog, Katie was taken by surprise.

“A dog?” She hadn’t expected to start her Saturday morning with a request like this. “And where did this come from?”

“Well, I was at Sally’s, and we were talking about it. We decided it makes sense for us to get dogs.”

Katie had to smile to herself. So, the same conversation was no doubt taking place a couple of streets over between Katie’s best friend Sally and her parents.

“So, you both want dogs? What would happen if one of you was allowed to get one and the other wasn’t?”

“Sally’s parents will let her get one,” Katie said dismissively. “So, it’s up to you.”

They have always tried to give her everything they can to make her happy, but Katie knew there was a problem – The last time she had asked Mike about getting a dog, it had almost ended their relationship.
