This book takes you back to the streets of New York from the end of the civil war up to the early 1900s. It describes the various immigrant groups coming to America and the extreme poverty of the times. First person reporting puts you right there. You feel the pain and struggles of the times but also develop admiration for the immigrants who survived and provided us our American citizen status.
