About this listen

Cher: The Memoir, Part One promises to be an engaging and exciting audiobook experience, befitting this incredible book. Read in part by Cher herself, the book is introduced, and each chapter launched, by the author. Rounding out each chapter as she continues the narrative is celebrated stage actor Stephanie J. Block. Stephanie starred on Broadway in The Cher Show for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award. Together, Cher and Stephanie share the storytelling duties, alternating within the chapters to create a unique audiobook treatment that will bring listeners fully into this period of Cher’s life—from her earliest childhood memories, to her meeting Sonny and their ascent into superstardom, her painful divorce from Bono, her relationship with Gregg Allman and her reach for independence. It is a story of creativity, individuality, motherhood, love, and loss, as only Cher could recount.

“Lending my voice to help deliver Cher’s memoir has been an honor and a thrill. Her life is fascinating, glamorous, surprising, exciting… and at times, completely heartbreaking. Her story is a beautiful balance of ULTIMATE stardom and accessibility. She is CHER for a reason and this book helps the reader get behind ‘the reason,’” says Block.

“When it came to completing the audiobook, I knew I wouldn't be able to do it all myself due to my dyslexia. But then I thought of Stephanie, who won the Tony for playing me on Broadway in The Cher Show. I knew she would be the perfect choice to get across to the reader the essence of me. I called her and within hours she re-arranged her schedule to start the recording. I felt so safe having her help share my story, and she did a beautiful job,” says Cher.

No rosy look back

I get so pissed when a public person I love uses two-thirds of autobiography space waxing nostalgic about bucolic hometown, what grammar school friendslooked like - and I am screaming get on with it! I don’t care about your granny’s fried chicken or your dad’s pet name for you. I don’t want a bs origin story — I want the grit, guts, and your side of the story as an adult. Cher must have heard me.

Cher is a queen!

Despite loving Cher and having grown up with her and Sonny and well, all her changes and morphs but I was really surprised to learn that Cher, despite coming across as a tough ass was really hindered by her relationship with Sonny. Yes, they were quite the pair and made the most of wringing out every success they could from their "routine" but it was sad to hear about all the grief he caused and yet she always found a silver lining to working with him and well, that was disheartening. Also, she seems to have had no idea of how money works and doesn't work and seemed clueless about how she could manage that side of her life (the first half). Despite all that, it's got some fun details and nuggets that show what a down-to-earth girl she really was. She was sure attracted to a weird selection of men, though: Gene Simmons, Gregg Allman, Sonny Bono....good heavens and the Texan guitar player....and then dating David Geffen....oh my.

Fantastic peek into very interesting life.

Love Cher, love the book, and the story she is telling. I struggle a little bit with the readers tempo and where and how she accentuates words. I am hypersensitive to that stuff though, so don’t let that stop you. I know Cher didn’t want to read it, but I wish she had. It’s a lot to read with dyslexia, even for a seasoned pro like her. It’s not something you can memorize and I can imagine it can be a challenge to read your own story, especially one this deep.

Lots of name dropping.

The narrator sounded just like a younger Cher. I enjoyed hearing about other famous people from my own time and I remembered them all.

Just a really interesting woman.

Well done, not a one dimensional person at all. Kept our interest from start to finish.

Wonderful and engaging!

Cher is transparent and engaging in her storytelling. Very open and willing to share details of a very human experience! I love memoirs and this one is now among my favorites. Looking forward to the second part. Thank you Cher!

Cher is a great story teller and narrator.

Loved the book. The song she is referring to that she couldnt find is called Dismantled Bride. It was a parody of another song from the 1920's. The last part of it is:
Well this left me broken hearted,
For most of my wife had departed,
So I slept on the chair,
There was more of her there,
Side by Side.

The original song was called Side by side and it was sung by Florrie Ford.
Hopefully this info can somehow make it to Cher.
