Fleeing from Paris and the Reign of Terror in 1793, Manfred von Bek once a valued revolutionary heads towards Switzerland and then onto Mirenburg in Waldenstein, the seat of the von Bek family.

Shortly after crossing the border, von Bek meets Libussa, the Duchess of Crete, who assists him in escaping from a tricky situation of mistaken identity, and von Bek becomes smitten with her.

Intending to follow Libussa, von Bek meets the Chevalier de St Odhran, an aeronaut and confidence man. After several unsavory adventures, the pair decide that they must flee Mirenburg, via airship. On the night of the escape, two mysterious figures board the ship, Libussa and the man who tried to murder Ulrich von Bek over one hundred years ago. The four of them form an alliance while in route to the City in the Autumn Stars where a meeting with Lucifer awaits von Bek and his companions as they continue his family’s quest to find the Holy Grail.

ive read a out 20 of Mr Moorcocks books. This one was different then all of them. Im still deciding g what I think.

Moorcock’s most underrated?

This has to be one of his more underrated stories. It takes you on a journey that touches on very relevant subjects, with moments of real emotional weight and introspection on social issues. It even addresses gender identity (YES!), and does so with surprising nuance.

The narration is fantastic. absolutely top-tier. Klosterheim is a personal highlight for me; there’s so much more depth to him here than in previous stories and it really changed how I see the character.

Thoroughly an enjoyable listen from start to finish. Highly recommended.
