Meh

This book made me realize I’m a very character driven reader. This title had one uninteresting character with no real depth, and a couple others who were just thin cannon fodder. Couple that with a narrator who was just reading instead of preforming the story, it was really hard for me to stay engaged. A cool idea for a story, completely fell flat for me.

Good story

I like the period. The story is good and the pacing is quick. I wanted more. The climax was ok. The performance was very good.

weird but good

a unique book. I've read hundreds of loosely historical fictions and none are quite like this.

Not great

The story itself was….for loss of better words…soulless. Not a single character was interesting or in the least bit likable. The story was repetitive as every 10 seconds they were discovering another new monster to fight and every monster was unoriginal. There were no great discoveries during this novel, no great revelations, and above all else no enjoyment in the concept or the conclusion. The orator is good at his job but failed to add any personality to these characters and often times the characters blended together because he used the same voice for each one. All in all not a fan.

Entertaining and at times masterful

it's a terrific performance by Alan Turton, he brings the work to life in a lovely way. Criticisms that some characters sound the same are ridiculous when the cast is this large and the novel this long, Turton's style fits perfectly and I am a permanent fan.

if this were my writing I would have carved it down and left out some more repetitive elements and given it a more robust ending; but its not mine and it should be recognized for the achievement it is--around 800 pages of entertainment that is for the most part well paced and enjoyable.

thoughts in no particular order: I found the ending frustrating only because the first half sets such a high bar of quality. It felt as though the author was fatigued by the end. This is begging to be honed down into a screenplay.
