Tolstoy’un 1859 yılında Russki Vestnik gazetesinde tefrika edilen romanı Aile Mutluluğu, Rus aristokrasisi çevresinde geçen bir aşk hikâyesini anlatmaktadır. Roman, 17 yaşındaki genç bir kız olan Mashechka’nın kendisinden neredeyse yirmi yıl yaşlı bir aile dostu olan 36 yaşındaki Sergey Mikhaylych’e olan aşkı ve inişli çıkışlı ilişkisi üzerinedir. Romanın ilhamının Tolstoy’un Valeria Arseneva isimli bir genç kızla yaşadığı ilişki olduğu bilinmektedir. Eser her ne kadar Tolstoy tarafından zayıf bulunsa ve yayımlanması istenmese de dostları ve yayıncısının ısrarıyla neşredilmişti. Aile Mutluluğu 1869 yılında henüz Anna Karenina ve Savaş ve Barış neşredilmemişken Rus gazetelerinde “Tolstoy'un bugüne kadarki en iyi eseri” sözleriyle methedildi.
