The theory was that the bible was not authored by a Single, Divine Authority, but was rather the product of a number of mortal authors, whose disparate work was subsequently cobbled together to form a whole work. This theory became known as the Documentary Hypothesis. One of the key drivers of this theory is the anomaly well-known to anyone who's studied the bible in its original Hebrew: the use of multiple names for G-d. Why would multiple names be used for a Single G-d? Must be, these scholars suppose, that these names are artifacts of diverse authorship. Unless, of course, these different names actually mean something...
