John Wesley [1703-1791], the spiritual father of more than thirty-five denominations and movements including Methodist, Pentecostal, Nazarene, Holiness, renewal, and charismatic groups, penned and preached these classic sermons on the Holy Spirit. Ordained in the Anglican Church in 1728, John Wesley received assurance of his salvation at a meeting on Aldersgate Street, London, 1738. It is estimated that for the cause of the gospel he traveled over 250,000 miles and delivered as many as 42,000 sermons. The number of works he wrote, translated, or edited exceeds two hundred.
In his sermon, "The Holy Spirit in God's Plan," Wesley stated, "... most of this generation are triflers. They are triflers with God, with one another, and with their own souls.... How few can bear, except now and then in a church, any talk of the Holy Spirit. When one talks of the Holy Spirit, he is usually thought of as a hypocrite or a fanatic...Is there any possibility that all will be filled with the Holy Spirit and show it in their speech and lives? Who can bring about this genuine Christianity? Will it be by you who have received the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit and Power contains ten Spirit-empowered, original sermons of John Wesley from his "Standard Sermons" and parts of his testimony, material from The Journal of the Rev. John Wesley, portions from Wesley's letter to Dr. Conyers Middleton, Holy Spirit power points at the end of each message, a subject index, and a full index of complete Holy Spirit passages from The King James Version of the Bible. An in-depth study guide has been included for those who want to understand Wesley and his teachings more fully.
