Is charisma essential for every leader? Absolutely. At its core, leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less. And to influence others effectively, you must connect with them.

In The Charismatic Leader: 21 Skills for Connecting with People, John Maxwell reveals his proven roadmap to more impactful leadership through the power of charisma. The secret? Shift your mindset from "Here I am!" to "Ah, there you are!" By prioritizing others, you’ll light up any room and cultivate deep, lasting relationships that elevate your leadership.

Building on principles from his acclaimed 25 Ways to Win with People, Maxwell distills charisma into 21 actionable skills across three transformational phases:

  • Becoming Interested in Others – The foundation of charisma begins with genuine curiosity and care.
  • Becoming Invested in Others – Learn how to add value to people's lives, creating trust and collaboration.
  • Becoming Interesting to Others – Develop a presence that captivates, engages, and inspires.

Charisma isn’t about commanding attention—it’s about giving it. When you focus outward, people are naturally drawn to you. By dedicating yourself to these principles daily, you’ll unlock new opportunities, build stronger teams, and lead with greater influence.

This book feels both timeless and timely aka just in time. There are so many useful, practical wisdom drops in here. It’s great that John Maxwell also did the narration himself. He and I have never met, but I do feel that he has mentored, coached, and challenged me from afar to become a better leader.

Great as expected

I love listening to John Maxwell. Read his books. It’s not like he’s actually reading to you. It’s actually like he’s having a conversation with you. His leadership expertise and guidance is second and none. He’s a master and loves helping people.

Another great piece of work by John Maxwell

The tips were based very much on kindness and empathy which while may be obvious at a glance. The way the author puts things into perspective is really just extraordinary. Definitely one of the best books I’ve had the opportunity to listen and learn from.
