Virgilio aveva ingiunto agli amici di distruggere, per l'incompiutezza, l'Eneide, il grande poema di propaganda augustea. Ma Augusto ne impose la pubblicazione. Come il greco Odisseo, vincitore, aveva viaggiato nell'Odissea per recuperare la patria perduta, il troiano Enea, vinto, deve viaggiare nell'Eneide per scoprire una patria nuova. Il poema, in 12 libri, è idealmente diviso in due parti, la prima (fino al libro V) sul viaggio e le peripezie per mare, la seconda (dal libro VII al XII) sulla lotta per la conquista del territorio della città promessa dal Fato. A separare le due parti è, nel libro VI, la discesa agli Inferi dove Enea raccoglie, nella memoria delle ombre passate, il messaggio profetico della sua utopia.
