About this listen
How could a visit to the kingdom's capital turn disastrous so quickly?
As a commoner, Kaylina Korbian's duty is to bow to aristocrats, avoid rabble-rousers, and call the haughty royal rangers "my lord"—especially the arrogant Vlerion of Havartaft.
Handsome, powerful, and a legendary swordsman, he's the last person you'd want to cross. Naturally, Kaylina irks him at their first meeting, and he arrests her.
Unbeknownst to her, the city is dealing with political strife and assassinations, and the rangers are on edge.
Kaylina must work with Vlerion to clear suspicion from her name, even as she unearths a dark secret about him that will either bind them together… or get her killed.
Shadows of Winter is a thrilling fantasy adventure perfect for fans of slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance.

Story
Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: She can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed. Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down.

Unfortunately, none of these skills earn her a lot of money. And when the taxes go up on her father’s farm, she’s not sure how to help him keep the property. Story
When Delia chose to major in archaeology, she didn't imagine herself scrounging for pickaxes and gold pans to sell on auction sites. What she doesn't imagine is stumbling across a decapitated body in an old mine near Prescott. Something dangerous has come to the mountains, and two Harley-riding strangers are the only ones who seem to have a clue. They speak a language Delia has never heard and carry mysterious artifacts she's never seen. Investigating these strangers might lead her to discoveries that change archaeology forever.

Story
Someone paid the vampire king’s creepy son to turn me into one of the bitey undead. I’m not hanging about to find out who or why. The vampires want me to stay with them for one hundred years of indentured servitude but I have this thing about following orders so I ran from the streets of London to the wilds of Alaska. I have an eidetic memory and a can-do attitude. I can-do anything to get away from the vampire king. So when the Sheriff of Portlock, a hidden paranormal town, invites me to be his assistant, I say sure thing. It beats servitude hands down.

Mary Frances Talbot—Frankie—is a necromancer, probably. Hard to say since she never met her parents. She can see the dead, talk to the dead, and a few other things that aren't strictly legal. It's fine. No worries. As long as she doesn't get caught. The whole not getting caught thing was going well until Samuel Harrow blew back into town wearing a Savannah Police Department uniform. He might be a witch, but he hates magic. He's not a fan of Frankie either. Which explains why he's her ex.

Mackenzie works for Catch and Release, a bounty-hunting guild, and she loves her job. She goes after the usual suspects: Rogue vampires, feral shifters, and crazed mages. Nightmare stuff. The last thing she ever imagined was Lucan, an infuriating and high-ranking dragon shifter, hiring her to find a child kidnapped from his Tribe. Even though her magical talents lean more towards bodyguarding and hunting dangerous beings, condemning a kid to death isn't who she is. But as Mackenzie gets deeper into her hunt, she uncovers deadly secrets surrounding the child, the kidnapper, and Lucan himself...

After 10 years at war, Jev Dharrow looks forward to hanging up his sword, relaxing with a cool mug of ale, and forgetting that the love of his life married another man while he was gone. But when his ship sails into port, a beautiful woman wearing the garb of an inquisitor from one of the religious orders waits to arrest him. He’s accused of stealing an ancient artifact with the power to start another war. After helping my steady dragon Zav with his family problems, I thought life would get back to normal. As normal as it can be when you’re a hit woman responsible for hunting down bad guys. That was before a strange artifact showed up in a bog and turned my ancient dwarven sword into a magical beacon. Now, my enemies can sense it from hundreds of miles away. Usually, fighting off opportunists wouldn’t be a problem (they don’t call me Ruin Bringer without reason), but even I can only handle so many attacks at a time.

I had planned the first bit. But I was supposed to be sold to the werewolves so I could save my friend from a fate worse than death. Instead, the bloodsuckers have me and so far? It's not going great. I've been shoved into a corset and made to look like an extra on the cast of Bridgerton, all to take part in the Harvest Games....

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Blinded by anger, the man who had sworn to protect me, shot me in a fit of rage when I was only sixteen years old. He thought he killed me. But my job wasn't finished yet. My days are spent as President of the Heavens Guardians MC. Nights are spent searching for the scum of the earth. Rapists, Murderers, Pedophiles. They all answer to me. I thought I'd seen it all. Thought my heart couldn't be any darker. Thought I knew exactly how far I was willing to go. Then a battered and broken woman was found behind our clubhouse, and I realized, I've never had a clue about the monster that lurks within.

Another Good One
Such a prolific writer. And what an imagination. Enjoyed the story and the characters. So often, the protagonist never develops and by the third book is still screwing up. Not with LB! Lessons are learned and I find myself rooting for the protagonist rather than wishing they would be killed off and put out of their misery. Well done.
The narrator was new to me and she did a good job. Pleasant voice and consistent characters.

"A Journey of Self-Discovery: A Captivating Start to an Intriguing Series"
I understand that crafting a story takes time—authors need to immerse themselves in the world they’re creating so readers can seamlessly fall into it. And it takes a truly gifted voice actor to bring that world to life, making you forget their voice entirely as the characters and their words leap off the page.
I’m not going to lie—I really want to hear the remaining three books in this series narrated. Of course, I had to check if more books existed, and thankfully they do. However, they haven’t been turned into audiobooks yet, and I know it’ll take time for the voice actor to bring those to life. I can’t wait for that to happen.
Yes, I know the stories are out there. Yes, I know the voice actor is still around. And yes, I’m trying to resist the temptation to buy the eBooks and read them myself, though I might cave—and even then, I’d still eagerly wait for the audiobooks.
This series is absolutely intriguing. The dynamics between the siblings and the ensemble cast are fascinating, with a level of psychological and therapeutic depth that I couldn’t help but notice. Whether or not the author intended it, the story speaks volumes about self-discovery and the journey to finding your true self.
This is just the beginning of the series, but it’s already so captivating. I’m excited to see where it goes.

It doesn't seem like Buroker...
Its a decent novel with many Buroker-like elements, but it feels more like an inexperienced 20 year old wrote this in her "style"...with mixed results. Or, I could believe it's a **very** early work of hers, dusted off and released.
I've read most of Buroker's novels, some twice.
This book has a decent premise with lots of potential for world building. I would likely read the sequel. But I hope any new releases rise to the level of her body of work thus far.
