One of the character traits that make up a diagnosis of NPD, is (hidden insecurities and a weak sense of self)

. A fear of rejection and abandonment issues forces the narcissist to control every aspect of the emotional state of the partner, target, victim! It’s this fear of rejection that drives this manipulative behaviour. Attempts at keeping the victim in a state of constant isolation and abuse lowers the self esteem and confidence, making them much easier to manipulate so they won’t escape!

In my experience, all of this happens behind closed doors. The public persona of a narcissist is the polar opposite of what’s actually happening in the home. You often hear stories of Husbands/wives murdering their spouse, in what looks like a completely random and out of the blue attack. When the truth behind the story could easily be years of domestic abuse, in such subtle ways that the victim finally snaps.
