Emma Mackenzie wants nothing more than an independent life, and she’s well on her way to securing it. But one thing stands in her way: Nicholas Forester, the man with whom she’s in competition for her grandfather’s land and money. If Nick can find a wife, that is. Her plan is simple: she will prevent him from forming any attachments and claiming the inheritance that is rightfully hers.

Nick will settle for nothing less than the deepest love—but there’s a catch. He must marry before the year is out if he is to inherit a great fortune. When he meets a lively young woman during his visit to the country, their attraction is immediate. Almost as immediate as his regret when he realizes that the woman is none other than Emma, the one person who could ruin his financial future.

As a web of secrets begins to unravel and romantic subterfuge ensues, Nick and Emma find themselves unlikely allies. When Emma learns that she, too, is required to wed before she can claim the inheritance, she sees only one scenario in which everyone gets what they want. But with everything she’s done to get in Nick’s way, the task before her may prove impossible. She must convince him to marry her.

Narrated by Noah Wall. She is one of my most favorite narraters and she told this story beautifully.

What a beautiful Regency Romance. I can’t help but sigh thinking of this story. Both MC’s after the same inheritance and so the lengths they go to thwart the other was so much fun. I loved learning more about each character throughout to see what drove them.

Secrets, Lies, and Regret’s. We often find ourselves in unfortunate circumstances and what we do at those times shows the measure of our character.

Emma Makenzie has dedicated her life to learning the ins and outs of her grandfathers estate, especially since she’s in line to inherit. When her grandfather has other plans she is determined to find a workaround.

Nicholas Forester, blessed by the kindness of Emma’s Grandfather is given an opportunity he can’t refuse. When Emma is determined to make sure he never inherits he has to change strategy.

I loved the witty banter, the challenging situations, and rivalry. But what is that without the romantic tension and as their feelings grew things changed and boy did I love it. I’m also a sucker for letter writing in stories and this one delivered.

EXCELLENT NARRATOR

This was my first book by this author, and I am happy to have found a new author who writes great stories with sweet romance, intriguing characters, and an interesting plot, without too much heat.

My only complaint would be that the storyline dragged a little bit at the end which made me disconnect a bit from the long awaited resolution for the characters.

The audible version was also quite well narrated. I look forward to further books by this Ms. LeCheminant.

A new author for me

I kept listening hoping that Emma would turn into a likeable person but . , , it never happened. The male lead, Nicholas is featured as contemptable because he grows the rumors that are started about him and foolish people believe them. Not a great quality in a person but no worse than the lead female, Emma, who tells out-and-out lies about him and gets her "feelings hurt" when he defends himself against her attack. The author tuns Nicholas into a weak kneed, overly passive milk-sop, attempting to rationalize Emma's behavior. Instead Emma just comes across looking like a bully.

Emma is not likeable!
