“The Freedom Of Being A Failure” - #108 A brave, in-depth conversation about several controversial, religious concepts with Taylor Brown - and why he continues to speak up

  • Summary

  • A podcast fan favorite and beloved friend of mine, Taylor Brown, is back today to answer some hard questions about religion. Taylor is such a kind, compassionate soul with a very different understanding of God than I have ever heard. Though I do not subscribe to Christianity, I do want to remain open-minded and continue to surround myself with humans who challenge me and help me not become judgemental towards others who believe differently.

*If religion has traumatized you this episode may trigger you. Still, I encourage you to be curious; this episode may help you realize that not all Christians are hateful. Taylor shows us a different way to think about it all, and he is a beautiful example of someone who loves God and also truly loves people. He isn’t interested in trying to change people or convince them to believe what he believes.

    During this episode, we discuss:

    • Why does living inside boxes feel safe

    • Is it possible for a world to exist where there is a space for everyone to find what feels right to them instead of all the judging and thinking there is a right and wrong?

    • Taylor talks about his thoughts on these three concepts:

    1. Being made in the image of God

    2. Love the sin - not the sinner

    3. Hell

    • Why the word acceptance feels patronizing

    • The story of how religion scared my mom into being responsible for other’s salvation

    • Why it’s important to Taylor to continue to speak up about controversial, religious topics on social media

    • Jesus never called anyone broken

    • How do we disagree with others without ending the relationship?

    • The most important thing Taylor wants his kids to learn from

I believe that valuing diversity is the key component to creating a better world. I purposefully seek out others with different experiences so that I don’t become narrow-minded. This conversation, though a bit triggering at times, also brought me some much-needed healing.

For me, Taylor is a beacon of hope. I hope this episode refreshes and reminds you that there are still some amazing humans in this world.
