"The Nightmare of the Mekong" is a gritty account of the Vietnam War, from a sailor who manned automatic weapons in intense combat, on the rivers, streams and canals of the Mekong Delta. It is profoundly personal, with diary entries, and letters to and from home. It includes summaries of official "Operations Reports" and military historical records. The interwoven references to music and news of the day provides a vivid picture of the culture and politics of the times. It is a true story of love, family, war, life and death. Some of this story will bring a smile to your face and warm your heart. Much of it will surprise you. Some of it will give you nightmares. This is an excellent first hand account memoir of a conflict mostly forgotten and neglected. I highly reccomend anyone to listen or read this. the only down side is the narration is AI ... though some times impressive, many times annoying and distracting. it can be funny though like when it said, "he was laying down heavy cover fire from his 50 calories." This book deserves a good narrator, but definitely worth a listen.

Great first hand account history

Ai read is horrible! No emotion what so ever! A human voice would have done justice to Mr. Sater's experience

lack of emotions in Ai read

i hated the AI virtual voice, VV couldn't differentiate words even in the same sentence. this was written in a different perspective, 60% letters to-from home.
had a human read this book it would have been enjoyable rather than a struggle.

not your typical read on Vietnam

First of all, the AI narration on this is atrocious. It really distracts from the book. It makes the story, which is in some ways mundane told in itself, even more so. The letters from the soldier to his families and friends are interesting. However, they included the letters from the family back to him, which are not very interesting, at least to me. Somewhat interesting, but not particularly well told.
